Many radio stations adopt a format of 24-hour non-stop Christmas music during the holiday season. Some radio stations wait until a few weeks before Christmas to start playing holiday music, but quite a few start as early as November 1.
Most of the stations adopting a Christmas format do so every year, but some stations use the holidays for "stunting", which means they temporarily play a non-standard radio format, such as Christmas music, as a publicity stunt to generate audience interest for an upcoming event, such as a change in the station's format or branding.
Most stations stop playing Christmas music some time between December 26 and January 1.
